35,000 Ton Drop Hammer Removal from Forging Facility

A forging facility reached out to All Enterprises Inc. with a critical request to remove a 35,000 lb drop hammer during a scheduled shutdown window. The project had a tight deadline, as the hammer needed to be disassembled, staged, and transported to an offsite facility for storage within a very short timeframe.

Challenges

  • Massive Equipment: The drop hammer, being an older piece of machinery, included components that weighed over 100,000 lbs, requiring meticulous planning and careful execution for disassembly and transportation.
  • Tight Deadline: The removal had to be completed within the shutdown window, leaving little room for delays or errors.
  • Aging Machinery: The age of the hammer posed additional challenges, as several components required creative approaches for safe and effective removal.

Innovative Solutions

All Enterprises Inc. employed a strategic approach to tackle these challenges:

  • Meticulous Disassembly and Staging: The team carefully disassembled the drop hammer, ensuring that each component was staged properly for transportation. Given the massive size and weight of the parts, specialized equipment and techniques were utilized to handle the disassembly safely.
  • Creative Problem-Solving: Due to the hammer's age, some components had to be removed using unconventional methods. The team’s experience with similar machinery allowed them to devise effective solutions for these challenges.
  • Comprehensive Transportation Services: After disassembly, All Enterprises Inc. coordinated and executed the transportation of the hammer components to an offsite storage facility. The logistics were carefully planned to ensure that the equipment was moved safely and efficiently within the required timeframe.

Project Outcome

The drop hammer was successfully removed, disassembled, and transported within the tight shutdown window, much to the client’s satisfaction. All Enterprises Inc. demonstrated their ability to manage large-scale machinery removal and transportation projects under challenging conditions.

Key Highlights

  • Expertise in Heavy Machinery: Successfully managed the disassembly and transportation of an aging, 30,000 lb drop hammer with components weighing over 100,000 lbs.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Overcame challenges related to the age of the machinery by employing creative and effective removal techniques.
  • Timely Execution: Completed the project within the client’s strict shutdown timeline, ensuring that all components were safely transported to the offsite storage facility.

130,000 pound Generator Removal and Transport

All Enterprises Inc., was tasked with a complex project to remove a 130,000 lb generator from a tight area with significant access restrictions, elevation issues, overhead power lines, and a challenging timeline. The generator needed to be removed from the landfill and transported over thirty miles to another facility, offloaded and set.

Challenges

1. Elevation and Access Issues: The site presented significant logistical challenges due to 1500 ft elevation changes and difficult access via dirt and gravel roads. Overhead power lines and narrow pathways further complicated the operation.

2. Equipment and Ground Conditions: Heavy equipment faced issues sinking into the gravel and dirt driveways, limiting the range of usable equipment.

3. Permitting and Route Navigation: The 16’6” tall, 130,000 lb load required extensive route surveys to navigate bridges and overhead obstructions along the 101 freeway through Santa Monica and ocean towns. Even CHP permit officials were uncertain about the best routes.

4. Timeline Constraints: The project was under a critical timeline, demanding efficient and precise execution within a week.

Innovative Solutions

All Enterprises Inc. developed a strategic plan to overcome these challenges without resorting to costly crane operations:

1. Trench Plate Utilization: We used 10 truckloads of trench plates, welding them together to create a stable pathway. This innovative use of trench plates provided a firm foundation for equipment movement and loading.

2. Jack and Roll and Forklift Use: Due to access constraints, the generator needed to be jacked up and placed on 100 ton dollies and a combination of come-alongs and the Versalift 60/80 were used to maneuver it out of the building. Once the generator was removed from the building, it needed to be relocated to a place where it could be loaded onto All Enterprises 12-axle trailer, this was done by plating a runway and utilizing two heavy forklifts (Versalift 60/80 and Versalift 100/140) to control both the push and the pull of the 130,000 lb generator up the inclined gravel road to the designated loading area.

3. Controlled Loading: Once the generator was positioned in an area accessible by a tractor/trailer, it was loaded onto a 12-axle setup trailer. The route included driving to the top of the landfill to turn around and descend.

4. Internal Equipment Use: All Enterprises utilized their own equipment, including Versalift 60/80 and Versalift 100/140 lifts and 100T dollies, steel plates, jacks and come-alongs -  ensuring total control and efficiency in the operation.

Project Outcome

The project was completed within the tight 7-day timeline, significantly faster and more cost-effective than the crane approach. All Enterprises Inc. demonstrated their capability to handle complex logistical challenges, providing a seamless solution for the client. Their comprehensive control over equipment and strategic planning ensured a successful project execution.

Key Highlights

  • Project Complexity: Tackled severe elevation changes and restricted access by utilizing All Enterprises’ extensive equipment fleet and plating supply.
  • Cost-Effective Solution: Delivered a significantly lower-cost alternative to the crane method.
  • Efficiency: Completed the project within a critical timeline, ensuring no disruption to landfill operations.
  • Expertise: We have extensive experience providing alternative solutions to projects often considered “crane only”, in addition - our experience with heavy haul gave us the confidence to develop successful route surveys to ensure safe transport of the 16’6” high 130,000 lb load.

Innovative Solutions

All Enterprises Inc. employed a strategic approach to overcome these challenges:

  • Coordinated Pickup and Delivery: The team picked up the bridge mill from the port of Long Beach and transported it to the client’s site with meticulous planning to ensure safe and timely delivery.
  • Efficient Uncrating and Installation: Despite the low overhead clearances, the team successfully uncrated and installed the machine by using specialized equipment and techniques to maneuver within the confined space.
  • Minimized Disruption to Operations: The project was carried out with minimal disruption to the client’s ongoing operations. The team carefully planned the equipment and travel paths to ensure safety and efficiency while the facility remained operational.

Project Outcome

The bridge mill was installed and made operational within the short timeframe, exceeding the client’s expectations. All Enterprises Inc. demonstrated their ability to handle complex machinery installations under tight deadlines, ensuring that the client could maintain business continuity while upgrading their facility.
